To clean a refrigerator vent, unplug the fridge, remove the kick plate grille near the floor, slide a long, thin duster in flat to pull the dust toward you, and vacuum it up as you go. On many fridges, that grille is where air moves over the condenser coils and around the compressor area. When it clogs with dust and pet hair, the fridge has a harder time getting rid of heat. Clearing it is simple, cheap upkeep that many households skip for years.
Look up your owner's manual using the model number, which is usually on a sticker inside the fresh-food compartment or on the door frame. Most modern fridges have coils underneath, reached through the front grille. Some older models have coils on the back. A few have a design the manual says does not need coil cleaning at all. The manual will also tell you how the grille comes off; most snap off with a gentle pull, and some are held with screws.
Unplug the refrigerator. This matters, because there is a fan and electrical parts behind that grille. A short unplug for this job will not harm your food if you keep the doors closed.
Take off the grille and wash or wipe it separately. It is often the dustiest part of the whole job.
Shine the flashlight in. You will usually see a gray, felt-like layer of dust on the coils or on the floor of the compartment.
Slide the duster in gently, keeping it flat, and pull the dust toward you. Do not jab upward or sideways. Coils and thin metal fins bend easily, and there may be wiring or a drain pan nearby.
Vacuum each load of dust as you pull the duster out. Repeat until the duster comes out mostly clean.
Wipe the floor in front of the fridge, snap the grille back on, and plug the fridge back in.
The duster comes out clean, the grille openings look clear, and you can see the coil surface instead of a layer of fluff. Some people notice the fridge runs a little quieter afterward, but that varies by model. A visibly clean grille is the result you can actually check.
Call a qualified appliance technician if you see oil, frost on the coils, or scorch marks; if the fridge was not keeping food cold before you cleaned it and still is not a day later; if you hear clicking, buzzing, or the compressor running nonstop; or if water is pooling under the fridge. Those are not dust problems, and they should not be handled with a duster.
As for how often, once or twice a year is a common recommendation, but check your manual for your model. Homes with shedding pets, a fridge in a dusty garage, or a kitchen next to carpet benefit from a look every few months. While you are down there, the Gap Cleaning Brush is handy for the grooves in the door gasket, where crumbs collect and the seal can start to stick.

Start with the gap, not the product name. A window track, a tap base, and a sofa seam are three different widths.
CareSplit tasks if you have more than one cloth. Kitchen grease and bathroom splash do not belong on the same square.
